Have you ever wanted to create your own gemstone jewellery? In this workshop, you get to do just that plus you get to experience not only all the basics of silversmithing, but learn how to set your chosen gemstone included in the price! Your design. You make and take home.... Choose your own stone from our collection and be guided through from design process to the finished unique ring!
You will design something that allows you to use a cabochon (or curved face and flat backed gemstone) or a cut faceted stone for setting in a bezel setting or a claw setting. As part of your class you will choose your stone with us from a very good selection of amethysts, turquoise moonstones, rose quartz, garnets and funky things in mother of pearl and druzy crystals and apply the gemstone to your design. Now if you are a fast learner and have a knack for this, you could probably make an additional piece (not a guarantee - its on you and your learning speed!)
This is a FULL DAY CLASS for those students who have more time and want to immerse themselves and make a dedicated piece. It's also a great class for students who believe they want to start an addiction to silver-smithing and maybe set up their own online business. In this workshop you will:
learn about the properties of silver, about soldering, filing, annealing and sawing in the morning session... along with designing your piece on paper and making a mock up as either a pendant or a ring, you decide! In the afternoon you will set your stone, polish and finish and get ready for photos! Because you will want to take lots!
In between you will break for a delicious lunch (we have both Western and Indonesian menus - please see here) Our food gets rave reviews too...try the 'sweet chilli tempe'...yum!
So let's talk about the setting part of your class...
What is "Bezel" setting?
The earliest known technique of attaching stones to jewellery was "Bezel Setting". A bezel is a strip of metal bent into the shape and size of the stone on top of a small internal soldered frame in silver and then soldered to the piece of jewellery. Then the stone is inserted into the bezel and the metal rubbed or “pushed” over the stone, holding it in place. This method works well for either cabochon (round topped and flat bottomed) or faceted (cut faced) stones. Watching it come to life is fabulous.
What is Claw setting?
Claw setting is a terminology used to frame a stone by grabbing it with silver prongs created from silver wire, in the areas of the stone that have strength and where you can hook..... or if the stone needs light to make it shine and the setting has to be very precise so that the light can pass through the stone from behind - a claw setting is used.
It is a great way to play around with an easy form of setting and its fun on a piece that is bigger. It's more precise on smaller stones and therefore needs to be done professionally, outside of the workshop. For you, a medium sized stone can be used in this class and we have many to choose from or a real whopper like this!
We want you to be able to create something beautiful and walk away feeling like you were able to accomplish it with little or no stress and plenty of time to learn. You never know....you may become a jeweller!
If you want to make a more complicated piece or pieces we suggest taking 2 days and really getting stuck in!
What is included on the day:
1 - 8 grams of silver
2 - 1 gemstones from our collection to the value of $15USD (upgrade if you like - we have plenty to choose from)
3 - Free return pick up in Sanur - if you need pick up elsewhere we can organise.
If you have done previous workshops with us for basics, you can bring your own stone to this workshop and set it - we will deduct the price of it for you, or tell us what kind of stone you are looking for so we can find the perfect one for you.
(additional silver can be purchased from us for $1.10 USD per gram on the day)
