You will have seen some funky resin jewellery in fashion lately. It's all over the catwalk in London and Paris....About a decade ago or more, Dinosaur Designs in Australia, became the height of cool, with their resin jewellery shaped like pebbles and boulders. Now resin is making an emergence again and we thought we would bring a class to you here at the studio and you can make your own cool resin jewellery!

Did you know that "resin" is a form of organic tree sap?

It is secreted by trees to protect themselves from being attacked by predatory insects, especially when the tree senses that it might get eaten from within or suffer a viral attack from outside. Amber is one such resin from the sap of trees that has been used for hundreds of year in jewellery design and the very interesting pieces that have insects that have been sort of frozen in time inside the sap before it has hardened, are super collectable. (Amber is predominantly found in Poland).

COOL FACT: Did you know the best way to test Amber is to heat a pin and put it through a piece of the Amber. If it smells of trees, it's the real thing!

Nowadays, all the impurities have been taken out, so it forms almost a see-through laboratory liquid and can be used for a variety of product manufacturing, including the production of surfboards.

In this class we show you how this liquid and the addition of colour pigment, can be manipulated to dry quickly in a design using “a starter” catalyst and “drying agent” to create a myriad of swirling kaleidoscopic colours. It is easy to make and with the right conditions can set in a short space of time and perfect for a 3 hour class to make a really unique and beautiful piece of jewellery.

With this class you will become part of the process of making some of your own resin colours and use our existing silicone molds to create the shapes you will use in making a ring, a pair of earrings, a bangle or pendant. You will make the bezels in silver and create a unique piece of resin jewellery to take home.

Due to the strong smell of resin sap, we do the mixing of the agents and the resin and colours, outdoors in our undercover gazebo and offer you a mask to wear for this process, as well as gloves to protect your hands. All other parts of this class are done inside our studio.

ON THE DAY YOU WILL:

1 – mix your own resins together and create your own resin design

2 – use our existing molds, OR cut, saw and file from a block of resin already made into the shape you want (we offer 10 different shapes ranging from stars and hearts to squares, circles and moons.

3 – You will learn to make the bezel shape to go around your resin piece/pieces in silver, brass or copper its up to you. You may even want to use Moku Megane bezel (a combination of all 3 metals together)

4 – You will solder, push and polish your piece (pushing is the technique to shape the bezel around the resin)

5 - Add a hammered base for a ring or a hook for earrings or if it's a pendant, add a loop and slide through a rubber, leather or waxed cotton cord to finish your piece.

NOTE: Resin that has been treated in the lab to rid it of impurities is considered a toxic substance. Please be aware we give you the option to wear masks where the mixing takes place outside under our gazebo and all polishing is done inside

If you need more silver/brass or copper for your project we offer silver at 15.000rp per gram and copper and brass at 6.000 per gram
